DESCRIPTION This unit will discuss the origins of gender inequality in our and other societies, how the inequality is built in and perpetuated by social structures and how this dis-balance between genders, seen through the perspective of a position of a woman in the society, lies at the foundation of much of what we term Gender based violence.

The unit will also discuss various forms of gender based violence, the issues of power and control that explain much of the dynamics of gender based violence and analyses it as a multifaceted problem that requires multifaceted solutions.

It will also bring professionals and experts in the field of Gender based violence that will provide in-depth knowledge dealing with specific forms of violence relevant to midwives and nurses. It will provide the attendees with enough knowledge of the topic, current legislations and services available in order for them to be able to better understand, treat and refer appropriately victims of Gender based violence in their professional capacity as midwives and nurses.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the historical origins of gender inequality and how this affects the dynamics of gender based violence and violence on women and girls;
- Debate, analyze and critically asses’ resources, policies and services available;
- Increase awareness in themselves and others about different circumstances and different experiences of victims of gender based violence.

2. Skills
By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:

- Recognize the power dynamics in Gender based violence situations;
- Apply their knowledge to their specific work settings;
- Provide better service and support to the patients in their care.
