| DESCRIPTION | This Unit will provide a basic introduction into the field of international migration as a major challenge of the 21st century facing practically all countries of the globe. The first part of the Unit will introduce some general concepts and definitions relevant to the study of international migration. This will be followed by a brief historical overview of migratory movements, with a main focus on the Euro-Mediterranean region. The Unit will then discuss several aspects which are of relevance to contemporary migratory flows and migration policies. These will include the so-called root causes of migration, integration issues, the relationship between migration and development, the economic impacts of migration in receiving countries as well as migrant smuggling and human trafficking. The second part of the Unit will be devoted to migration policies, i.e. measures adopted by states aimed at managing migration both at the domestic and international levels. It will be highlighted, for example, how migration policies often have to navigate between conflicting political (or security) and economic interests, or how cooperation between states in managing migration is often difficult. The Unit will also discuss the EU’s policies on migration and asylum. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Describe and analyze the main challenges arising from contemporary international migration; - Distinguish different forms of international migration and identify their main characteristics; - Explain the main driving factors of international migration; - Describe through which instruments states seek to manage international migration and analyze the challenges and (potential) impacts of such measures. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Critically analyse and discuss the complex phenomenon of international migration; - Critically analyze and discuss states’ migration policies.
