| DESCRIPTION | Greek Mythology has always fascinated people of all ages. The reason for this has created the very subject of mythology, with experts contributing ideas from history, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, philosophy, psychology and other fields. The reason why we concentrate on Greek Mythology, rather than on Roman or Egyptian, for example, is owed to the fact that it was Greek and Roman literature, imbued by Greek Mythology, which influenced the rest of the ancient and modern worlds. The Unit is intended to introduce students to the study of Greek Mythology, distinguishing stories about the gods, heroes and monsters and attempting to explain how these stories are different one from each other, and what made them be included in Greek Mythology. Unit Aims: This Unit intends not only to classify myths into three categories, those being historical, aetiological and fantastic, but also attempts to study what creates a myth and how it is passed on to later generations. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Grasp what mythology and myth mean; - Distinguish between various types of myths; - Understand that myths are created or accepted, and passed on orally or through literature; - Appreciate the effects of myths on man. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Discern what causes myths; - Identify their causes; - Suspect the validity of stories; - See an element of truth in them.
