TITLE People on the Move: Understanding Global Migration

UM LEVEL H - Higher Level

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences

DESCRIPTION We are living in what Castles and Miller have famously termed ‘An Age of Migration’ and indeed the effects of international migration are often the subject of popular discussion. In spite of this there is still limited knowledge and understanding of current global trends in migration, as well as the role that international migration has played in the construction of contemporary societies.

This Unit seeks to address this knowledge gap by introducing students to current global migration trends. An overview of the basic theories and concepts in international migration will then enable the students to start approaching critically the root causes and effects of international migration. Topics covered will include labour migration, refugees and asylum-seekers, integration, ethnic entrepreneurship, student migration, return migration and others.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Describe contemporary global migration trends;
- Describe the role of migration in the formation of societies throughout history;
- Identify and describe key concepts and terms in the international migration field, such as international migration, refugees and integration;
- Discuss major international migration theories depicting causes of migration and its effect on sending and receiving societies;
- Discuss major questions within the field of international migration from a multidisciplinary perspective.

2. Skills:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss topics related to international migration in small groups;
- Reflect on international migration trends in different regions of the world, and construct an argument using migration terms and concepts;
- Give oral and multimedia presentations to small groups.
