| DESCRIPTION | This unit will cover the foundations of computer security and provide students with a solid base to further develop in the area. Typical units include: - General Security Concepts - Basic Risk Management process - Network Infrastructure security - Security Monitoring - Securing the network - Basics of cryptography (this will not delve into the math but rather the application) - Security Policies and procedures - Security Administration. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this unit is to provide the students with the essential knowledge to understand IT security, principles and practices that are deployed to ensure the protection of IT and computer systems. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the principles of computer security including web security; - Understand and discuss cryptography and some key encryption techniques used today; - Analyse security policies as well as protocols to implement such policies. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse a computer system and pinpoint vulnerabilities; - Configure a network system securely; - Communicate and apply secure policies which address security in a system.
