DESCRIPTION This study-unit will offer students the opportunity to become familiar with a number of theories proposed over the years about foreign language learning and teaching. It will cover the main findings of research carried out in MFL, and it will equip the learners with the knowledge required to be able to interpret the learner's development in MFL.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to introduce the learners to the theories of foreign language learning and teaching. It will, in particular, overview the research and its results in MFL. It will also offer a platform for discussion, relating theory to practice in MFL. Of particular relevance is Chaos/Complexity Theory that has been found to have significant explanatory value in MFL. Furthermore, both psycholinguistic and sociocultural theories will be presented and their relevance to MFL research will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Identify the relevant theory related to a particular teaching task or activity;
2. Describe the theoretical development of foreign language pedagogy;
3. Discuss how theory and practice in language teaching are intertwined;
4. Evaluate the relevance of both the psycholinguistic and sociocultural approaches in MFL;
6. Explain the learning curves of learners in MFL.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Outline the most important foreign language learning theories;
2. Explain the research results obtained in MFL;
3. Give examples of pedagogical activities in MFL based on specific theories.
