DESCRIPTION This unit will introduce participants to the international nature of archives. This emerges both from the records themselves and their interrelations with fonds in international archives and also from built collaborative projects and initiatives. The workings of international organizations such as the International Council on Archives and ICARUS will be explained highlighting the benefits of such links. The ethics of international participation and collaboration will also be a point of discussion. Sensitive topics such as Shared Archival Heritage and the recent developments in this area will be introduced to participants. Finally, case studies of archival EU collaboration projects will be shared with participants.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims to help participants to familiarize themselves with the main principles and channels of participation in international collaboration and projects. It also focuses on sensitive issues such as shared archival heritage.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the major organizational networks available for international collaboration in the archives world;
- discuss of the implications of sensitive issues such as shared archival heritage;
- critically discuss the challenges of funded projects between archival institutions in different countries.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply current policies and practices in the design of archival projects or funding bids;
- assess projects of an international nature from an archival perspective;
- build communication plans for archives to deal with funding bodies or technical experts.
