DESCRIPTION The study-unit starts with an introduction to the different types of archives including national archives, notarial archives, audio visual archives, ecclesiastical archives and private archives. Information follows about the different archives in Malta. This is followed by a series of visits to some of Malta’s main archives. At the end of the study-unit students are expected to prepare a class presentation comparing aspects assigned by the lecturer from the different archives they have visited.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to introduce students to the various specialized archives in Malta, and to evaluate how the content of theory taught during the first two study-units (Records Management: Theory, Principles and Practice and Archives Management) is applied in real life situations. Students are expected to attend the visits and take active participation and note similarities and differences between the set-ups, facilities, services and holdings of the archives visited.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appreciate the day to day challenges in managing records centres / archives;
- Understand the way records centres / archives in Malta are organized;
- Distinguish between the different specialized archives;
- Acquire knowledge on the contents of the holdings preserved in the different Maltese archives.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the whereabouts of the major archival holdings in Malta;
- Assess the different approaches necessary in managing different types of archives;
- Carry out sorting and finding aids creation tailor made for the needs of the different archival sectors;
- Build up rules and regulations of access tailor made for different archival scenarios;
- Identify repositories best suited for their area of research.
