DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the clinical presentation, investigation and management of common paediatric conditions. The unit is intended to consolidate the knowledge obtained in the previous year, identify deficiencies in the students' knowledge, skills and abilities and guide them into their eventual role as foundation doctors looking after paediatric patients.

Study-unit Aims

1. To consolidate the theoretical knowledge that underpins the practice of Paediatrics.
2. To perfect history taking and physical examination in Paediatric patients.
3. To refine communication skills with children, relatives and peers.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Discuss in detail common clinical problems and their management in both Paediatrics and Neonatology.
2. Develop a working knowledge of the normal child and those with developmental issues.
3. Describe situations when advice must be given to seek specialised medical care.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Formulate and discuss a differential diagnosis.
2. Negotiate a comprehensive management plan including treatment, follow up and after care that may include attention to feeding, parenting and social issues.
3. Counsel parents on the diagnosis and management of their child’s illness.
4. Prescribe drugs and order treatment including interventional therapy and secondary consultations, as appropriate.
5. Manage acute Paediatric emergencies.
6. Apply the principles of evidence-based medicine to Paediatric practice.
