Study-Unit Description

CODE MEC2102

TITLE Engineering Mechanics - Particle Dynamics

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Mechanical Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives an insight into the following topics:
- Kinematics of Particles: Rectilinear motion; General Curvilinear motion; Coordinate Transformation; Relative motion;
- Introduction to Kinetics: Newton’s Laws of Motion;
- Dynamics of Particles: Force, mass and acceleration, Work and Energy, Impulse and momentum;
- Steady mass flow and variable mass;
- Mass moment of Inertia and its transformation.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit familiarizes students with the underpinning science and mathematical equations involved in modeling objects used in a variety of mechanical engineering applications through particle dynamics.

This unit aims at equipping the students with the necessary tools that are required in the design and analysis of simple systems by treating them as a particle in order to calculate velocity, acceleration, dynamic forces, work done and power required to meet particular functionality. This unit leads to the study-unit Engineering Mechanics - Machine Dynamics which then uses this fundamental science and applies it to a system of particles and interlinked mechanisms.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between rectilinear and curvilinear motion;
- Analyse the motion and dynamic response of an object by treating it as a particle;
- Establish the forces, work done and power required to attain a particular motion and functionality.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Grasp the fundamental underpinning science associated with particle kinematics and kinetics;
- Calculate the velocity, acceleration, dynamic forces and energy associated with a particular motion and functionality.
