Study-Unit Description

CODE MEC4015

TITLE Water Treatment Technology

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Mechanical Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is concerned with those topics of water technology, in particular water treatment technology, that an engineer might encounter in his professional work. Such topics include: sources of water, water cycle, water chemistry, water impurities, water legislation, membrane and thermal desalination including reverse osmosis, renewable desalination, de-ionisation, filtration, water softening, neutralisation, deaeration, ultra-pure water, sedimentation, flotation, pollution and effluent treatment.

The study-unit includes two industrial visits to appropriate plants, such as an Reverse Osmosis and/or sewage treatment facility.

Study-unit Aims

The main aim of this study-unit is to impart to the student enough theoretical and practical knowledge that s/he may be in a position to carry out a preliminary design of water treatment plants effectively and utilizing the latest technology, as well to manage their maintenance and operation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the water cycle, water chemistry, and the various sources of water;
- List the parameters that need to be measured to achieve the water quality required for a given application and/or water quality standard;
- Explain the requirements of water-related legislation.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse a given water quality problem;
- Design the appropriate solution for the given water quality problem;
- Design the appropriate maintenance and operation procedures for a water treatment plant, based on practices recommended by the suppliers of such plant and equipment.
