Study-Unit Description

Study-Unit Description

CODE MEC4018

TITLE Ship Structures

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Mechanical Engineering

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is a qualitative and quantitative approach to the understanding of ship hull structures dependant on the purpose of the vessel. The student is provided with the knowledge to understand the ship hull structure characteristics, ship hull structural arrangements, structural members, beams and girders, together with the design of plates and stiffened panels. The programme describes the primary ship girder loadings according to classification rules, describing the longitudinal strength calculations and mid-ship bending strength calculations according to the rules and regulations. In conjunction with these concepts the secondary and tertiary combined loadings and stresses are also considered. An overview of the ship materials and construction is described.

The study-unit is specifically aimed at those students who want to pursue a professional and/or academic career in Naval Architecture.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit is intended to develop the student’s knowledge of ship structures in general depending on vessel type. To provide an understanding on the combined roles played by the whole ship hull structure, the individual structural assemblies and strength members, as well as design individual elements according to classification rules. The study-unit will enable the students to understand and perform strength calculations using first principles and applying classification society rules.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- describe the role played by the various conventions & IACS.
- describe the basic hull configurations and structural features of various ship types.
- define the main configurations and characteristics of ship hull structural assemblies.
- describe the scantlings of ship strength members.
- analyse and describe the static and dynamic loading conditions and induced stresses to the ship hull girder (primary loading).
- explain the use of the rules and regulations in assessing the strength of ships.
- describe the secondary and tertiary loading and stresses in the strength members.
- analyse and describe the role played by the plates and stiffened panels.
- describe the materials used in ship construction.
- describe an overview of the ship production process.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- sketch typical ship hull structure layouts.
- design structural assemblies and strength members according to classification rules.
- implement the IACS rules to assess the longitudinal strength of ships.
- calculate and assess the bending strength according to IACS rules.
- calculate the ship girder loadings and stresses in terms of the primary, secondary and tertiary loadings.
- use beam theory to calculate loadings and stresses in critical areas.
- design plates and stiffened panels.
- use commercial naval architecture software.
- use classification society rules.
- undertake an assignment to calculate the strength of various ship structural assemblies.
