| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will enable the students to gain sound knowledge of midwifery care during the puerperium period. Learning Objectives: By the end of the study-unit the student will: • Develop knowledge of the physical, psychological and social needs of mother during the puerperium; • Develop an awareness of the role and responsibilities of the midwife with regard to the puerperium; • Be able to use the daily postnatal assessment, examination, as basis for exploring normal physiology and potential complications; • Gain knowledge on the elements of assessment procedure integrating technique physiology and management; • Develop the necessary skills and attitudes required to the care of mother during the puerperium; • Become knowledgeable of the potential deviations from normal in mother during the puerperium. Content: • Management of care to the mother during the post partum period and planning for the future; • Signs of possible deviation from the normal process and reasons for adjustment of care and management; • The role of the father in the puerperium; • Establishment of feeding the newborn infant; • The interaction of the new baby within the family.
