DESCRIPTION Learning Objectives:

By the end of the study unit the student will:

- Become aware of the midwife’s role and the scope of her practice in the community during the antenatal, labour and postnatal period;
- Review the skills of a midwife required for home birth including her responsibility to ensure that women have the necessary information to choose this if they wish;
- Appreciate the midwife’s relationships with other health care professionals involved in the care of the pregnant woman.

- The role of the community midwife;
- Care in pregnancy;
- Intrapartum care;
- Postnatal care related to the community;
- Home Births;
- The primary health care team;
- Developments in the community midwifery service;
- The organisation of community midwifery care;
- Models of community midwifery Care.
