| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is targeted to second year midwifery students. This study-unit will further advance the teaching of midwifery clinical skills through the use of lectures, demonstrations of skills and opportunity of hands on practice in the clinical laboratory. This study-unit focuses on developing competence in the intrapartum and immediate postnatal care of women and newborns. Students will integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills essential for safe and evidence-based midwifery practice. Emphasis is placed on clinical decision-making, effective communication, and professional accountability in the management of labour, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to assist students in the development of skills and knowledge of intranatal care of the mother and the immediate care of the mother and neonate following childbirth. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand how to take care of the women from admission in labour until childbirth and the immediate postpartum period; - Understand the care of the newborn immediate following delivery; - Demonstrate understanding of safe, evidence-based, and woman-centred intrapartum care; - Explain the physiological and psychological processes of labour and birth and their implications for practice; - Discuss the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of pain management; - Outline midwifery responsibilities in the care of women undergoing interventions or operative births. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Admit a woman in labour; - Apply appropriate clinical skills in the assessment, monitoring, and support of women during labour and birth; - Perform intrapartum skills that include: vaginal examination, artificial rupture of membranes, perineal care, episiotomy, prepare for and conduct normal birth, and manage the third stage of labour; - Care for women requiring analgesia in labour; - Care for women requiring labour interventions and operative births; - Care for the mother and newborn immediately after birth; - Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documenation of care provided. |
