DESCRIPTION This study-unit addresses core activities of the midwife, which includes the need to support their clients through the provision of reproductive health and family planning education throughout the woman's lifespan. The study-unit includes women's health in society, women and work, sexuality in women, fertility awareness, natural methods of fertility control, artificial methods of fertility control, preconception and planning a pregnancy, abnormalities of menstruation, sexually transmitted infections, breast-care, diseases of the uterus, morbidity in women, psychological support and menopause.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to give the student a sound understanding of women's health across the woman's lifespan.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate knowledge about methods of fertility control, preconception care, infertility, abnormalities of menstruation, sexually transmitted infections and common gynaecological problems;
- Evaluate new trends in women’s reproductive health.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide appropriate care and advice to women with gynaecological problems;
- Educate women and their partners about preconception care;
- Provide support and information to women and their partners on fertility awareness, family planning and reproductive health throughout the lifespan.
