UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 8

DEPARTMENT Applied Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION This is a practical study-unit highlighting basic principal techniques and introducing the laboratory environment to the students. Students will have a 3‐hour practical session per week. During each session a different introductory technique will be explained and carried out by the students. At the end of the session students are expected to write a laboratory report discussing the tests carried out and the results obtained.

Previous Knowledge required:
- Basic safety procedures;
- Use of analytical balance;
- Basic mathematical procedures;
- Titration pipettes.

The practical list consists of:
- Report writing, Avoiding plagiarism and referencing;
- Specimen Collection/Reception/ Processing in the laboratory;
- Specimen Collection/Reception/ Processing in the laboratory: Venipuncture;
- Basic Laboratory Apparatus;
- Blood Centrifugation and using a Spectrophotometer;
- Basic Lab Mathematics and Measurements I: Concentrations & Buffers;
- Basic Lab Mathematics and Measurements II: Pipetting;
- Basic Lab Mathematics and Measurements III: Dilutions;
- Basic Lab Mathematics and Measurements III: Accuracy and Precision Pipetting;
- Pubmed and literature searches;
- Basic Cell Pathology Techniques: Tissue processing/embedding.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the basic principles underlying each of these techniques;
- Accurately follow a protocol to carry out these tests;
- List the limitations of each technique;
- Critically appraise the results of the above tests and discuss their significance.
