Study-Unit Description

CODE MME3211

TITLE Principles of Material Characterization

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

DESCRIPTION This unit describes modern analytical methods in simplified terms and emphasizes the most common applications and limitations of each method. The intent is to familiarize the student with the techniques and give him sufficient knowledge to interact with the appropriate analytical specialists, thereby enabling materials characterization and troubleshooting to be conducted effectively and efficiently.

Study-unit Aims

This introductory unit is designed to show the principles of the physical phenomena used for material characterization in a non formal manner. the concepts of qualitative and quantitative analysis of matter will be introduced. A number of characterization techniques will be considered and their applications, capabilities, and limitations will be discussed. This unit is not intended to give an in depth analytical analysis of the techniques being introduced.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. explain the basic concepts of the interaction of ionizing radiation with solids.
2. explain the affect of strain and impurity atoms in a crystal lattice on diffraction peaks produce by shining radiation through such crystal.
3. differentiate between quantitative and qualitative analysis.
4. describe the philosophy of material and process selection for the field of surface engineering

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. choose an appropriate characterization technique for a particular application.
2. predict the approximate outcome from a test.
3. use x-ray diffraction results to calculate phase composition in polycrystalline metals.
4. describe the function of the various components in a number of modern characterization machines
