TITLE Materials for the Maritime Environment

DESCRIPTION The study-unit can be divided in four main parts namely:
- Materials;
- Joining;
- Degradation & Surface engineering;
- Failure Analysis.

The materials section covers steels, aluminum alloys and composite materials, with an emphasis on the former and more specifically; hull structural steels, high strength,quenched and quenched and tempered steels for welded structures and steels for bulk carriers.

Joining reviews the various welding procedures frequently used in shipbuilding, consumables, assessment of welds and difficulties frequently encountered.

Degradation and Surface Engineering reviews the mechanisms of corrosion when in the presence of sea water and surface treatments, particularly paints. The relevant standards shall be reviewed.

Failure of Materials discusses fracture and fatigue and non destructive testing techniques.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to give students within the marine sector a holistic even if not an indepth appreciation, of the relationship between application, material and welding process selected as well as problems encountered and methods of prevention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- critically evaluate the suitability of material/processes for various marine applications;
- deliberate on how materials normally used in the marine sector differ from materials for more general use;
- discuss how different welding processes and their suitability for different applications even if within the same marine sector.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- prepare reports;
- anticipate and prevent problems;
- conduct literature search;
- receive feedback;
- demonstrate professionalism.
