DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers fundamental theory and design techniques for the implementation and testing of radio frequency and microwave systems such as matching networks, filters, combiners, transmission media, high frequency amplifiers,antennas and oscillators. Detailed analysis and modelling of these systems are also covered.

Study-Unit Aims:

The unit aims at introducing students to techniques and theory for the design of fundamental radio frequency and microwave systems. The study-unit also aims at introducing students to commonly used characterisation parameters. Such concepts and techniques are important, in particular when one considers high data rate connections and transmission within a computer engineering framework.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- comprehend, model and analyse radio and microwave systems;
- design fundamental radio and microwave system blocks such as matching networks (both lumped and distributed), antennas and filters.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- design, simulate, optimize and implement fundamental radio and microwave system blocks;
- use instruments such as a network analyser and design paradigms such as the smith chart and electromagnetic simulators.
