DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with an extensive historical outline of brass instruments. It also includes the repertoire that had a lasting impact and contributed to the growth of art music for this family of instruments. It will show how these instruments were affected by the evolution of history with its related social alterations, technical developments and musical styles. Moreover, this study-unit focuses on the growth of solo, chamber and orchestral music written for brass by outstanding composers from the Middle Ages to avant-garde music.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
a) offer students the opportunity to demonstrate more awareness of style on brass instruments;
b) enable students to demonstrate historical knowledge of brass instruments;
c) support students to prepare professionally for a public performance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) identify the reasons behind the technical alterations throughout the different periods;
b) set up his own effective performance strategy that will eventually lead to a natural performance;
c) appreciate instrumental music written for brass instruments in different eras.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. discuss keyed brass instruments, their mechanism and their role in art music;
b. present information gathered on the idiom and peculiarities of each brass instrument, their similarities and present the outcome in presentation format;
c. discuss and present knowledge of brass solo and chamber music written in different periods.
