TITLE Repertoire Studies: Violin

DESCRIPTION A systematic survey of repertoire for solo violin, orchestra bowing and routine . Analysis and discussions will be followed by listening to corresponding works. Emphasis will also be placed on historically-informed interpretations of corresponding works from each historical period.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to familiarise the student with bowing techniques, terminology and stylistic performance, different techniques of analysing music for violin from the standard solo and orchestra repertoire.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) recognise the stylistic differences of composers from different historical periods and the different interpretative skills required;
b) identify other works by different composers from other periods and styles.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) apply the right bowings to any violin part (solo or orchestral);
b) discuss violin music from the common practice period.
