DESCRIPTION A repertoire of advanced piano music by composers of different periods and styles will be analysed and studied. Attention will be given to different aspects of technique such as finger and arm movements, rotation, staccato and pedaling. Piano pieces by 20th century and contemporary composers will also be discussed. Repertoire will be chosen individually for students according to their individual abilities as performers.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:

(a) familiarise students with the method of preparing scores for performance at the piano from the technical, analytical and historic points of view;
(b) enable students to choose a number of works of different styles to be studied, depending on the technical ability of each individual student;
(c) equip students with the right knowledge and skills for a public piano performance.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) identify what the analysis of works for piano from different styles and periods entails;
b) evaluate the preparation process for a public performance on the piano;
c) evaluate the most effective type of practicing tools for studying the pieces discussed and analysed during the course.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) technically deal with demanding passages in the pieces chosen;
b) apply different styles of interpretation;
c) perform in public the piano works studied. with particular attention to structural analysis and historically-informed performance aspects;
d) prepare and present a piano recital of about 30 minutes duration and write the corresponding programme notes.
