DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to provide students with the opportunity to address the clinical skills that are required in preparation for a clinical setting. Students develop their ability and dexterity in a simulated environment. They have the opportunity for hands on training by adopting the relevant scenarios encountered in the practice area. Aspects of study include evidence-based practice and clinical skills procedures. This study-unit includes a process of learning by the use of theory, demonstration and practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to introduce students to clinical skills and procedures that are reserved for nurses; and to train students in the performance and implementation of these skills and procedures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- evaluate the different competing rationales informing practice;
- discuss the various aspects of the clinical skills selected by the adaptation of evidence-based practice;
- justify own actions of clinical interventions with a sound theoretical background;
- comprehend the theoretical background behind a number of nursing skills;
- develop the psycho-motor skills necessary to perform these nursing skills safely under supervision;
- know the latest evidence based practice that determine how these skills are performed;
- critically evaluate the competing rationales in the way these skills are performed.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to, under supervision, demonstrate skills in relation to:

- impaired skin integrity prevention and careand surgical wound care;
- principles of enteral drug administration, including controlled drugs;
- technique for the provision of patient comfort and pain management;
- the ability to assess neurological function, respiratory function;
- managing interventions related to closed chest rain systems, oxygen therapy.and inhaled medication;
- the ability to demonstrate emergency measures for life support, suctioning and care of tracheostomies;
- safe patient handling, mobility and self-care;
- promoting activity and appropriate use of support equipment.
