DESCRIPTION This unit will assist students to develop a greater understanding of advanced mental health nursing, including its management and evaluation, and provide the relational context that will enable them to develop an in depth understanding of various issues such as cognitive-behavioural therapies, family interventions and therapy and the importance of the therapeutic relationship. Additionally students will develop a comprehensive outlook concerning factors (e.g. sociocultural) that influence mental health care and their critical thinking skills whilst also considering their roles in relation to a variety of psychological interventions and counselling. This will include analysis of the theoretical underpinnings and major concepts of each approach. It is also designed to cover the key issues, directions, interventions and evidence-based practice related to psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery. Through supervision students will be assisted in the development of their own unique approaches to intervention with their patients and their respective family.

Study-unit Aims:

The unit is designed to develop student knowledge in the field of rehabilitation and recovery of people with mental illnesses and to enable them to access research that will inform evidence based best practice in this specialist area of mental health care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Develop an awareness of a range of options for therapeutic nursing management and strategies and to incorporate these management options into their specialist clinical area;

Develop a greater awareness of self and the ways in which personal attributes affect interaction with patients and others;

Demonstrate acquisition of communication skills required for effective therapeutic interactions;

Plan interventions and establish goals to meet the unique needs of the patient - discuss a range of contemporary issues in psychological interventions;

Critically appraise the evidence available regarding the efficacy of diverse interventions;

Develop an understanding of sociocultural aspects which influence the development of a therapeutic relationship;

Plan rehabilitative psychiatric nursing interventions with individuals, family members and communities.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Conduct collaborative patient focused assessment;

Develop a recovery focused individual rehabilitation package for patients with diverse needs;

Undertake clinical team leadership activities including care planning, implementation and evaluation.
