TITLE General and Pharmaceutical Microbiology 1

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Pathology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises an introduction to Microbiology (Bacteriology and Virology) and an introduction to the principles of sterilisation and disinfection.

Topics covered include:
Bacteriology: taxonomy; morphology; structure of a ‘typical’ bacterial cell; intracellular organelles; storage granules; cell walls; bacterial capsules; sphaeroplasts and protoplasts; murein; pigmentation; flagella; fimbriae and sex pili; endotoxins and exotoxins; mutations, transduction, transformation, transposons; plasmids; and spores.

Virology: morphology and laboratory diagnosis; taxonomy; Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Rickettsia; influenza viruses; HIV diagnostics; rotavirus, pox viruses and blood-borne infections.

Principles of Sterilisation and Disinfection: definition of terms; basic concepts; principles and methods of sterilisation; sterilisation controls; principles of disinfection and disinfectants and their modes of action.

Learning Objectives

To deal with the principles of general microbiology, microbial structure, taxonomy, growth, replication, and the laboratory examination of micro-organisms, including basic virological techniques.
To expose the student to the theory on which common pharmaceutical microbiology practice is based. The unit content will also provide the student with hands-on experience on the theoretical aspects covered in the lectures.
