Study-Unit Description

CODE PHB0305

TITLE Introduction to Dental Biochemistry and Cell Physiology

UM LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

MQF LEVEL 4

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Physiology and Biochemistry

DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers all the relevant essential elements of biochemistry and cell physiology underlying the field of dentistry. Emphasis will be placed on the foundations of biochemistry including the molecules that are found in the cell, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and nucleic acids. Where feasible, integration with the dentistry field will be carried out as in the description of the macromolecules including bone, enamel and dentine.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at providing students with:
- Basic knowledge of Biochemistry;
- Basic cell anatomy and physiology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the multiple inorganic, aliphatic, and aromatic compounds of importance to the dental profession;
- Explain in basic terms the metabolic pathways of relevance to dental health care;
- Describe the cell organelles, membranes and architecture involved in maintaining oral health.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the multiple inorganic, aliphatic, and aromatic compounds of importance to the dental profession;
- Discuss in basic terms, the metabolic pathways of relevance to dental health care;
- Identify and describe the cell structures with particular relevance to the cell organelles, membranes and architecture involved in maintaining cellular health.
