| DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit, students will be have the opportunity to conduct mentored research on a subject approved by the Board of Studies. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to guide students in undertaking academic research that will form the basis of their Dissertation Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the main and subsidiary research questions that will form the core of their dissertation; - Demonstrate knowledge of the questions which form the subject matter of the dissertation; - Analyze or critique the subject matter through both primary and secondary sources; - Compare and contrast different positions within the literature surrounding particular philosophical questions. - Formulate a dissertation research proposal. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and formulate a hypothesis concerning a philosophical question; - Review the literature in order to find a way of providing an answer to this question; - Appraise philosophical arguments and their relevance for a research project; - Plan research and organize materials in preparation for a research project. |
