DESCRIPTION | - Action of drugs on receptors and use of drugs as agonists and antagonists - Action of drugs inhibiting enzyme systems - Basic principles of drug absorption, drug distribution, drug metabolism and drug excretion - Biopharmaceutics and the relationship between the dose administered and the response will be elucidated for different dosage forms and different dosage regimens - Measurement of drug action - The use of drugs and the autonomic nervous system - Cautions and contraindications - Drug reactions - Drug interactions - Pharmacovigilance - Toxicology. Study-unit Aims: - To introduce students to the effect of drugs in the body and to the handling of drugs by the body. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the process that the drug undergoes after being administered; - Describe the relationship between the administered dose and response for different dosage forms and different dosage regimens; - List sources of drug information; - Define pharmacovigilance. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge of drug interactions, common adverse effects and allergies; - Recognise types of drug interactions; - Define biopharmaceutic and pharmacokinetic terms; - Use drug information sources to retrieve relevant information; - Summarise requirements for pharmacovigilance processes.
