DESCRIPTION This study-unit studies the nature and role of law and order in society at large and, more specifically, in the life of the Church. It analyses various aspects of the Code of Canon Law, particularly those related to the Church as People of God, the teaching office of the Christian community, canonical marriage, and the temporal goods of the Church. In the words of 'Sacrae Disciplinae Leges', this study-unit presents canonical legislation as an efficacious means by the help of which the Church may perfect itself in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, and show itself ever more suited to carry out its salvific role in the world.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the role of law in the life and practice of the Church;
- To present students with the underlying basic principles of the philosophy and theology of canon law;
- To enable students to understand the historical development of canon law;
- To help students become familiar with the Code of Canon Law;
- To empower students to interpret and apply Church laws in concrete situation practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- outline the canonical norms relative to the Church as People of God;
- identify the basic legislation that regulates the teaching office of the Church;
- define the canonical doctrine and legislation related to marriage;
- grasp the elementary norms concerning the temporal goods of the Church.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- master the tools of interpretation and application of canonical norms;
- promote and safeguard the rights and duties of the Christian faithful;
- define the various grounds of nullity and possibilities of dissolution of marriage;
- explain the fundamental nature and mission of Church Tribunals.
