DESCRIPTION This is a clinically based subject in which students undertake a sustained period of clinical podiatric practice at the Ulcer Management Clinic. The aim of this unit is to develop high-level clinical skills and professionalism in the management of ulcers.

Objectives:

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

- Show an understanding of the different types of Ulcers
- Show an understanding of the properties and indications of the various types of dressings
- Show an understanding of the aetiology (systemic or otherwise) of ulcers.
- Demonstrate an aseptic technique
- Show an understanding in the general principles of the management of ulcers.
- Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in the management of ulcers.

- Aetiology of ulcers
- Prevention of complications
- Management of established ulcers
- History taking and assessment
- Examination of the wound
- Cleansing agents and desloughing agents
- Criteria for the ideal wound dressing
- Types of dressings used in podiatric practice
- Hyperbaric Oxygen
- Scotchast boots
- Padding and orthotic technique
- Other aspects of management
