DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to assist individual students to engage at more depth on specific theory and/or specific research aspects in Sociology. The programme will be tailor-made to meet the academic needs of each individual student registering for this unit.

Individual students who have been advised to register for this study will work under guidance of designated tutors.

The tutor will work closely with the student in the selection of the area to be focused on. They will offer regular supervision meetings to provide individual guidance on recommended readings and offer individual tutorials to clarify and shore up any conceptual issues of concern as required.

Tutors will also read and give feedback on the work in progress.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- empower students to take ownership of their learning by setting individually tailored goals and developing a plan to achieve them;
- enable students to develop an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of their subject area;
- encourage students to critically engage with key theoretical and empirical literature and appraise it;
- develop students' ability to synthesise theories and findings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of their subject area;
- identify and explain key sociological concepts and arguments in their subject area;
- demonstrate critical engagement with pertinent literature;
- analyse the state of literature on the subject area, including knowledge gaps and limitations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify their own learning needs and set learning goals;
- conduct literature searches using online and library resources;
- develop critical thinking and appraisal skills;
- strengthen academic writing skills through the writing of a literature review.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Since this study-unit will be tailored-made for each student by the assigned tutor, the reading material will be developed on a case by case basis, depending on the chosen subject area.
