DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to present the concepts of intermodality and interdisciplinarity in the field of road 
transport. It presents the various disciplines involved, in order to provide a wider vision of the possible 
career opportunities in the road transport sector. Furthermore, students will learn to assess the road 
network from the users’ point of view and from the network managers’ perspectives. An overview of 
national and international transport planning and implementation plans will also be presented. 
A focus will be placed on sustainable mobility challenges and the future outlook of the road transport sector will be 
discussed.  

Aims: 
The aims of the study unit are to: 

- introduce road transport as part of the wider intermodal transport network; 
- impart knowledge on the various fields and disciplines related to road transport; 
- give a strategic outlook to local and international road transport; 
- describe current mobility challenges and emerging issues in the management of road networks. 
 
Learning Outcomes:
  
Knowledge and Understanding: 
By the end of this study-unit, a student will be able to: 

- improve the understanding of transport terminology; 
- have a basic knowledge about the various transport disciplines and their interrelations. 

Skills: 
By the end of this study-unit, a student will be able to:
 
- develop an analytical understanding of the field of road transport; 
- analyze and evaluate emerging issues in road transport;  
- discuss local and international transport issues.
