DESCRIPTION This is a basic introductory study-unit to the study of tourism and leisure. It will introduce the student to the basic structures and infrastructures of tourism. Special attention is given to the role of work and leisure. Through this study-unit the student will be able to understand the history of tourism and the role of tourism in today’s society and economy.

Content:

The themes of the study-unit will include:

- The History of Tourism;
- International Tourism with reference to Malta and the Mediterranean;
- The role of work and leisure within pre-industrial, industrial and post-industrial societies;
- Social orientation to work and leisure; Intrinsic and extrinsic values, Satisfaction and Self development;
- The organisation of leisure in contemporary society with particular reference to organisation theory. The leisure Society;
- The Role of Government in Tourism;
- The Future of Tourism.
