DESCRIPTION This basic design course encompasses the fundamentals of the fashion design process. The focus is on the basic fashion design elements and principles, the creative process of inspiration and design experimentation. The purpose of this course is to present students the elements and principles of fashion design. Recognition of design styles is also included as components of the course. Students will be required to demonstrate the creative use of inspiration and design experimentation through various projects. Students will also be required to learn and will be assessed on their knowledge of styles and applicability of the elements and principles.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to:
- Learn how to use the design elements like lines, shapes, texture, and colour to make a fashion design;
- Understand the natural forms, perspective, and human figures, forming the basis of fashion design;
- Understand the basic proportions of the fashion figure through the analysis of photographs and using figure research as a basis for the creation of fashion design sketches;
- Understand design elements and principles as they apply to the fashion industry;
- Apply knowledge and use of design terminology and design styles in apparel.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions.

Assessment:

A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the academic year.
