TITLE The Art of Maltese Bobbin Lace 1

UM LEVEL I - Introductory Level

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences

DESCRIPTION This Unit introduces the Art of Bobbin Lace as has been traditionally made in Malta since the Renaissance and all through the reign of the Knights and British Rule until the present time. In the European context, Maltese Lace has continuously adjusted its style to compete with the demands of fashionable lace in European markets and elsewhere. At the same time the method of making Maltese Lace with its stitches and designs, managed to survive as unique in the lace world, hence meriting the title as “one of the oldest bobbin laces of Europe”.

These characteristics will be dealt with within the time frame of the women’s life style of our times, making it easier for the young generation to be attracted to this art as well.
