| DESCRIPTION | Objectives: To provide students from the different disciplines with the skills necessary to write an undergraduate dissertation in their field of study. Content This study-unit aims to help students understand the basic structure and presentation of research with special reference to the writing of undergraduate dissertations in their field. Students are made familiar with the pre-dissertation process, first by conducting a preliminary literature search via academic databases and mapping the research field to identify a topic and draft a strong research proposal. Early sessions will therefore focus on the identification and analyses of current journal papers and local dissertations more specifically to study their typical structure and note possible variations which may be adopted in students’ own study. More chapter-focused sessions will assess various sections such as the introduction, the literature review, and the methodology among others, noting typical mistakes in content writing and presentation which tend to be made during the writing process. Some emphasis will also be made on the appropriate presentation of data, especially with respect to readability, coherence and conformity with the referencing styles currently in use by the respective departments. Students will be made aware of UM regulations governing the use of generative AI in postgraduate dissertations. Ethical issues in the use of AI and its limitations as related to dissertation writing will be discussed. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: View reading list |
