The University of Malta is seeking to recruit a Knowledge Transfer Manager or a Knowledge Transfer Executive, at the Corporate Research and Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) on a full-time basis. This post is directly answerable to the Director for Corporate Research and Knowledge Transfer.

The Knowledge Transfer Manager or a Knowledge Transfer Executive shall work closely with the Director for Corporate Research and Knowledge Transfer, to support  third-party and  Industry-academia collaborations as well as contributing to the Technology Transfer function of the Knowledge Transfer Office, in line with the Intellectual Property Policy of the University (within this context, Technology Transfer, or Research Exploitation, is defined as a collaborative, creative endeavour that translates knowledge and research into impact in society and the economy).

 

Eligibility

Applicants for the post of Knowledge Transfer Executive should possess a minimum level of a Master's degree (or equivalent) in a field relating to Knowledge Transfer or in a field relating to Engineering, Science or Technology.  Preference will be given to applicants with a Master's degree in Engineering and/or the Life Sciences and to applicants with relevant experience, key skills or established track record of achievement (on the lines listed at https://attp.global/rttp-program/#core-competencies).

Applicants for the post of Knowledge Transfer Manager should possess a minimum level of a Master's degree (or equivalent) in a field relating to Knowledge Transfer or in a field relating to Engineering, Science or Technology. Additionally, they should have at least four years of experience in knowledge transfer and/or research and innovation management, including stakeholder relationship management. Preference will be given to applicants with a Master's degree in Engineering and/or the Life Sciences and to applicants with relevant experience, key skills or established track record of achievement (on the lines listed at https://attp.global/rttp-program/#core-competencies).

The appropriate candidate should:

  • Ideally have an understanding of a university knowledge transfer process and knowledge transfer activities, such as third-party collaborations, intellectual property negotiations and commercialisation, and spin-out company creation;
  • Ideally have an understanding of intellectual property management and post-licencing management of intellectual property;
  • Have the aptitude to support the implementation of Technology Transfer activities of the University; and a keen interest in the commercialisation of different technologies;
  • Have the aptitude to support collaboration with third parties, including Industry and academia;
  • Have excellent programme management and organisational skills and be capable of managing their own time.
  • Have excellent written and verbal English communication skills as well as numeric communication skills.

 

A passion for innovation and technology, as well as maturity, flexibility, creativity, leadership, good management and communication skills and teamwork are essential for the post.

Further Information

The Knowledge Transfer Office coordinates, supports, and drives the implementation of the University’s knowledge transfer strategy. This office is responsible for working with the University authorities, members of staff and students:

 

  • To define, evaluate and protect intellectual property;
  • To commercially exploit research results through licensing and spin-outs;
  • To support the formation of new spin-outs from the University; and
  • To collaborate with industry partners, as well as governmental entities and non-governmental organisations.

 

Moreover, the office helps manage various programmes to drive the knowledge transfer agenda of the University in harmony with and in response to national, social and economic requirements; the needs of local industry; emerging expertise and intellectual property; and funding opportunities.

 

The key responsibilities for the post of Knowledge Transfer Manager shall include:

  • To manage in the day-to-day operations of the Knowledge Transfer Office at the University, including by:
  • Managing, promoting and supporting University authorities, academics and students with industry governmental entities and non-governmental organisations.
  • Managing pro-actively to promote University-industry and third-party collaborations amongst industry partners and supporting such collaborations;
  • Management of assisting and supporting of academics and industry partners to apply for externally funded collaborative research projects;
  • Raising awareness and building basic skills regarding University-industry collaboration through training actions;
  • Monitoring and publicising industry collaboration and knowledge transfer activities and related achievements;
  • Promoting the Knowledge Transfer Office’s activities within the research community by attending meetings, presenting at seminars/workshops and contributing to events to increase awareness;
  • Taking an active role in leading the Technology Transfer functions of the Knowledge Transfer Office, in line with the Intellectual Property Policy of the University, and working closely with the Director for Corporate Research and Knowledge Transfer and the other colleagues at the Office;
  • Managing and implementing the commercialisation of research projects within the portfolio of the Knowledge Transfer Office;
  • Management of intellectual property within research projects, both national and externally funded, and lead in the support as necessary within such calls from a Knowledge Transfer perspective.
  • Assisting in market research and formulating business plans for the commercial exploitation of intellectual property rights;
  • Assisting University authorities, academics and students to participate in knowledge transfer;
  • Managing and preparing content in relation to the promotion of the Knowledge Transfer Office, and with publicising and disseminating information about its technologies and achievements, including through social and other media, including its website; and
  • Coordinating and promoting of the Knowledge Transfer Office’s activities within the research community, including by contributing to strategic meetings, seminars and workshops, and assisting with the organisation of events to increase awareness.
  • Manage knowledge transfer activities resulting from the commercialization of technologies from the Transdisciplinary Research and Knowledge Exchange (TRAKE) project.
  • To liaise with other functions within the Knowledge Transfer Office to ensure:
    • that all information and relationships are managed to the highest standards;
    • that contributions are made to the marketing materials and business development plans;
    • that an active part is taken in creating a high-performing function within the Knowledge Transfer Office in terms of quality, achieving goals and maintaining professional relationships.
  • To liaise with other support functions within the University as necessary.
  • To perform such other duties as may become necessary and as assigned by the University authorities.

Period and Working Conditions:

 

The post is for a definite period of four years, after which the position may be renewed as a permanent position within the CRKT Directorate, depending on the performance of the individual and the exigencies of the University of Malta.

 

The appointee is expected to work:

 

  • On a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council;
  • At such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University Authorities.

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of one year, and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
