Applications are invited for a full-time post of Senior Teaching Associate in Sign Language and Sign Linguistics in the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology at the University of Malta.

The appointment will be offered on an indefinite contract basis, subject to a probationary period of one year.

The appointee will be required to contribute to teaching, administrative duties and supervision up to and including MQF Level 7, in the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology, and as may be required by the University. The role involves day-to-day management, administrative duties, and teaching on ongoing and new programmes offered by the ILLT.

 

Eligibility

Senior Teaching Associate

Entry to the grade of Senior Teaching Associate, shall be open to candidates with a first degree (Level 6) and a Masters degree (Level 7) in linguistics-related disciplines, and a minimum of six (6) years teaching experience. Applicants will also ideally present evidence of study and expertise in areas related to developmental linguistics, and will have experience using, applying, and providing training in sign languages and sign linguistics both in Malta and in international contexts. Whilst knowledge of Maltese Sign Language will be considered an asset, it is essential that the applicant be a user of at least one sign language.

 

Salary

The annual salary for 2026 attached to the Senior Teaching Associate grade is as follows:

Senior Teaching Associate; €45,962 plus Academic Work Resources of €2,146.00

Further Information

General Working Obligations:

A Teaching Associate / Senior Teaching Associate will be appointed on a full-time (40) hour per week basis out of which no more than half shall be devoted to teaching.

 

The Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology

The Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology has a long-standing commitment to the Deaf community in Malta, and to supporting equal opportunities for access to the workplace, education and lifelong learning. The Institute has taken an active role in the development of sign language in Malta as a key skill to be widely used and disseminated in Deaf and hearing communities across the islands, with current efforts focusing on up-skilling fluent LSM users to further promote and spread the use of the language.

 

The duties which the appointee may be expected to perform include:

  • Preparing course materials;
  • Providing administrative support to ensure the smooth running of programmes of study;
  • Teaching, including lectures, tutorials, seminars, practice sessions, and one-on-one support;
  • Providing continuous assessment and detailed feedback to students;
  • Setting and marking of examination papers and assessment rubrics, within established time-frames;
  • Organising and conducting formative and summative assessments, through various modalities;
  • Supervising and providing feedback to dissertation students and marking dissertations, within established time-frames;
  • Preparing academic reports regarding student progress and attendance;
  • Being available for consultation with students;
  • Promoting students in their academic welfare;
  • Identifying students who are encountering difficulties and providing additional support as needed;
  • Using the University of Malta’s VLE (Moodle), and other online platforms and modalities as required, to interact with students;
  • Participating in, and organising seminars and/or conferences as required;
  • Participating in meetings of the Board of Studies and Board of Examiners as required;
  • Participating in the administration of academic affairs at academic and university levels;
  • Contributing to national and regional development particularly in the area of specialisation and through cooperation with governmental, intergovernmental, regional and non-governmental institutions and services;
  • Any other relevant duties as may be required by the University.

 

The Selection Procedures

  • The evaluation of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • Short-listing of candidates.
  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.
  • A short presentation on a subject allotted to short-listed candidates.

 

The Selection Process

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Resident Academic Staff” (https://www.um.edu.mt/hrmd/policiesprocedures).

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant Academic / Work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability; and
  • Performance in interview

 

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the Statues, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
