Students who intend to use human subjects as part of their research are obliged by regulations to first obtain permission from the University Research Ethics Committee.
Students who apply for an M.Sc. and who will make use of external funding, must inform Faculty Office about this in their application. Furthermore, if there is a deadline to submit applications to the funding body or if the funding body needs a notice of admission to the degree from UoM, Faculty's Postgraduate committee is to be informed accordingly, so that such applications can be prioritized if deemed necessary.

The intention of this course is to instill scientific rigor in the endeavour to propose improvement in an area of specialisation. This course will acquaint the student with skills pertaining to dissertation preparation and presentation methodology. In particular, the students will acquire skills in the research, augmentation, evaluation, presentation, defense and scientific procedure of the selected field, and will be able to make a significant original contribution to knowledge in their chosen domain.
Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to demonstrate acquired expertise, define hypothesis, define originality, expound ideas and defend them through evaluation and orally. In particular, students will be able to identify an opportunity to make a contribution to scientific knowledge; will be able to critically analyse the body of knowledge comprising a domain, and to demonstrate why their contribution is valid; develop critical thinking and develop theoretical concepts; evaluate their findings and compare their results to the results of other relevant work in the field; document their progress and the results of their contributions in an accessible manner; construct coherent arguments and communicate ideas clearly; manage their time, including setting and meeting deadlines and milestones; design models of the world in which to demonstrate the validity of their hypothesis.
Details of Career Opportunities and Access to Further Studies
On completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to either pursue a research career in academia, or within other R&D establishments, or be eligible to more lucrative career opportunities and career growth paths within the ICT industry or industry in general.
Details of Target Audience
This course is intended for students who have completed either the Bachelor's degree within an ICT area or an Master of Science (by Research) or the Master of Science in ICT, and who now wish to pursue further specialization within this or a related ICT area. This course in not intended for graduates from non ICT disciplines. Supervision shall be offered in research areas in which the Faculty can offer expert guidance and supervision and subject to the availability of resources in the various departments within the Faculty.
Applications for a Doctor of Philosophy in Information and Communication Technology may be submitted at any time of the year, but enrollment shall be with effect from one of the following dates: 1st October, 1st December, 1st February, 1st April and 1st June.
New applicants need to submit an application together with a detailed proposal and recommendation from the supervisor. Please read the guidelines below concerning submitting a proposal.
