Digitisation Unit

The Digitisation Unit at the University of Malta Library is dedicated to preserving and enhancing access to the University’s valuable collections by converting physical materials into high-quality digital formats. Through our digitisation efforts, we support research, education, and institutional memory, ensuring that historical and scholarly resources remain accessible for future generations.

Our projects encompass a broad range of materials, including rare books, historical manuscripts, maps, and archival documents. Digitised materials are made available through the University’s online repository, OAR@UM, where users can explore, search, and interact with historical texts. We also work on improving the quality of older digitised texts using the latest Optical Character Recognition (OCR) techniques. We are exploring AI-driven handwritten text recognition (HTR), where we develop models to transcribe historical a range of languages including Maltese manuscripts using advanced technologies such as Transkribus.
