Overview

This interactive session is designed for academics who will be serving as sport mentors during the upcoming academic year. It will begin with an overview of the Student-Athlete Sport Programme (SASP), highlighting its core aims, the role of academic sport mentors, and the guidelines to support student-athletes. Participants will gain insights from experienced academics who have successfully supported student-athletes in balancing their academic and sporting commitments. This will be followed by a Q&A session and an open discussion where participants are encouraged to share their own experiences, challenges, and approaches to effectively supporting student athletes.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will

  • understand the Student-Athlete Sport Programme’s (SASP’s) objectives, including the role of academic sport mentors and UM support mechanisms for student-athletes.
  • learn about practical approaches to support student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic responsibilities.
  • exchange good practices and strengthen a university-wide culture of support for student-athletes.
