Dr Anne Marie Camilleri Podesta is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta, where she is Lead Clinician for Research and Audit within the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine. She has held a visiting academic appointment within the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Malta since 2010, and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Her principal research interests include perioperative medicine, preoperative fasting and nutrition, patient safety, quality improvement, implementation science, medical education and simulation. She was Principal Investigator of the THIRST multicentre study, involving 5,100 patients across 46 centres in 12 European countries, and has contributed to international consensus work on perioperative fasting. Her current research focuses on reducing prolonged perioperative fasting and translating evidence-based recommendations into routine clinical practice. She has authored and co-authored research, consensus statements, reviews and editorials in international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Camilleri Podesta is Chair of the National Anaesthesiologists Societies Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) and serves on the ESAIC Board of Directors, as well as contributing to its Guidelines, Patient Safety and Quality, and Sustainability activities. She is President of the Association of Anaesthesiologists and Intensivists of Malta.
She has a longstanding interest in medical education and faculty development. She is Foundation Training Programme Director in Malta, an EDAIC examiner, and faculty on international education and patient-safety programmes. She is also an experienced European Resuscitation Council educator and course director.
Her work integrates clinical research, education, guideline development and implementation science, with a particular focus on improving the safety, quality and patient-centredness of perioperative care.
