Carl Caruana graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in 2016. During the year 2016/17, Carl followed a Masters Degree by research in Engineering at the same university, where he studied and tested experimentally different methods used in industry for measuring mechanical friction from internal combustion engines. Following the Masters Degree, Carl Caruana started reading for a PhD at University of Malta with focus on developing a test method for robust mechanical friction determination and measurement of in-cylinder heat transfer in internal combustion engines. During his research at University of Malta, Carl was supervised by Prof. Ing. Mario Farrugia. He was awarded his PhD in 2021.

In parallel to his studies, Carl was also active in Formula SAE between the years 2016 and 2017 with the University of Malta racing team who competed at track Riccardo Paletti, Varano Italy. During his studies, Carl Caruana and three fellow researchers also competed as a team in an engine simulation competition by ESTECO Academy, Aprilia Racing and Gamma Technologies. They qualified within the first thirteen teams out of a total of ninety-one teams. In 2017 Carl Caruana joined the International School for Foundation Studies, where he coordinated and delivered study-units on Physics and Computing to international students willing to enrol in undergraduate degree courses in Science, Engineering, Building Services and ICT.
