Dr Axiaq’s academic and professional career has centred on the teaching of Maltese language and literature at secondary and post-secondary institutions, teacher education, curriculum development, educational leadership, and the promotion of Maltese language and literature. His appointments include teaching of Maltese language/linguistics and literature at various State and Church secondary schools and in Further Education institutions. He also lectured in Maltese pedagogy and methodology within the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, where he contributed to the preparation of future teachers of Maltese. Besides lecturing, he examined students during their teaching practice and supervised undergraduate and post graduate long essays and dissertations in the teaching and learning of Maltese. Dr Axiaq also served as Head of Department of Maltese within the Secretariat for Catholic Education, the central body responsible for supporting Catholic Church schools in Malta and Gozo. In this capacity, he was part of the Curriculum Entitlement services that provide subject leadership and pedagogical support to educators across Church schools. His responsibilities included providing academic and pedagogical leadership for the teaching of Maltese in Church schools, supporting teachers through school visits, mentoring, and professional guidance, organising and delivering in-service training and continuing professional development, contributing to curriculum development, teaching resources, and assessment practices, while liaising with school leaders and educational authorities to promote Maltese language education. Furthermore, Dr Axiaq also held the position of Principal Subject Area Officer at the MATSEC Support Unit – University of Malta. This is significant because it establishes that Dr Axiaq was not merely associated with MATSEC as an academic or examiner but he held a formal professional/administrative post within the MATSEC Support Unit, with responsibility for the Arts & Languages subjects. His portfolio placed him within MATSEC's academic examination structure, with responsibility for coordinating the Arts and Languages subject area and participating in the processes surrounding syllabi panels, examination papers, marking arrangements and related assessment matters.
