I read for my undergraduate degree in Education at the University of Malta. This was soon followed by a postgraduate degree at Masters level at the Institute of Education, University of London. My postgraduate training recently culminated in my achieving a Doctorate from the Institute of Education, University of London within the interdisciplinary field of early years educational effectiveness.

My academic passion lies within the realm of effectiveness research. My doctoral thesis is currently the only local large scale study to examine the value-added outcomes of Maltese pupils between the age of 5 and 6 for mathematics in conjunction with an examination as to the effectiveness of classrooms and of schools and an assessment as to the quality of practice of Year 2 teachers and associated head teachers.

I am a great believer in the positive, negative, or ineffectual impact that educational practitioners, at all levels of the educational hierarchy, exert on pupils and/or students. My personal philosophy is that the impact and influence of teaching (or lecturing), both direct and latent, must ultimately become manifest through the added development and added learning of children and/or adults alike.
