Ms. Mariosa Caruana is an educator and advocate for environmental and social justice, with experience spanning formal science education, non-formal adult education, and community- based transformative spaces.
She has a Bachelor’s degree in Education specializing in Biology and has taught science and biology at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. She also holds a Master’s in Education for Sustainable Development, where her participatory action research focused on the potential of intergroup dialogue to support community development and amplify the voices of individuals with and without experiences of homelessness. Ms Caruana has contributed to research on Education for Sustainable Development, housing discrimination, migration and integration, using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
She is currently the Awareness Raising, Outreach & Reconciliation Coordinator at Jesuit Refugee Service, working on the development of educational resources, workshops, and facilitating reconciliation and conflict-sensitivity programs at local and international levels, including work with JRS teams in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Her work focuses on fostering just relationships between different migrant groups, as well as between migrants and non-migrants and championing the role of education and community in driving social change.
With over ten years of experience in the voluntary sector, Ms Caruana is a board member of the NGO Right to Smile, where she offers support for international projects as well as promoting effective volunteering.
Ms Caruana is also the co-founder and president of the Malta Association of Professionals in Education for Sustainable Development (mapESD), advocating for the professional recognition and development of Education for Sustainable Development at all levels.
