Petra Paula Spiteri is an experienced biology educator and academic with a strong commitment to excellence in science education. She graduated from the University of Malta with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology and Chemistry and subsequently obtained a Master's degree in Biology.
She is currently the Subject Coordinator of the Biology Department at Junior College, University of Malta, where she teaches Advanced and Intermediate Biology while leading the department's academic and administrative activities. Her work focuses on curriculum development, assessment design, laboratory-based learning, and the promotion of innovative teaching practices that enhance student engagement and scientific literacy.
Petra is actively involved in the development of national biology syllabi and examinations, contributing to the continuous advancement of biology education in Malta. She has organised and led numerous educational initiatives, including STEM outreach activities, teacher professional development programmes, and student enrichment projects aimed at fostering curiosity and a passion for the life sciences.
Her academic interests include marine biology, animal and plant physiology, taxonomy, science pedagogy, the integration of practical inquiry into biology education and inclusive education, with a particular interest in special education and understanding how students with learning difficulties learn most effectively. She is committed to exploring evidence-based teaching strategies that promote equitable learning opportunities and ensure that all students can achieve their full academic potential. Through her work, she strives to prepare the next generation of scientifically literate citizens while fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. She is dedicated to preparing the next generation of scientifically literate citizens and inspiring future biologists through high-quality teaching, leadership, and educational innovation.
