Simon Phillips holds PhDs in medieval History from the University of Winchester, UK and the University of Athens, Greece. He was a research fellow at the University of Winchester from 2006-2008, then a research fellow at the University of Cyprus from 2009-2023. Since 2023, he has been an Affiliate Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta. In the Spring term of 2013, he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta on the Hospitaller Studies MA course. His research interests focus on the Knights Hospitaller in the eastern Mediterranean. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, UK, since 2009. His publications include the monograph 'The Prior of the Knights Hospitaller in Late Medieval England' (Woodbridge: Boydell & Brewer, 2009), a book of conference proceedings (edited with Emanuel Buttigieg) entitled 'Islands and Military Orders, c.1291-c.1798' (Farnham: Ashgate, 2013) and an edited volume, 'The 1522 Siege of Rhodes: Causes, Course and Consequences' (London: Routledge, 2022). His most recent article include ‘Green Fingers: The Hospitallers’ encounters with their environment on Rhodes’ in the journal Crusades vol. 22, Issue 2, (2023) and ‘The Master’s Garden and Palazzo at Malpasso: Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained?’ (with Erik J. S. Bruns) in the journal Frankokratia Vol. 5, Issue 1 (2024).
