Steve Agius is the Chief Executive Officer of Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC).
Prior to this role Steve served as Chief Executive Officer of Identità, the government agency responsible for identity management, e-ID cards, e-passports, work and study visas, residence documents, acts of civil status, and public deeds. He was appointed to lead a transformation programme within the agency for a defined period, focusing on strengthening governance, aligning strategic direction, and enhancing service quality. Between 2020 and 2024, Steve served as the Chief Operating Officer at Mater Dei Hospital for five years. He was also responsible for coordinating the COVID-19 national vaccination program, which achieved the fastest national COVID-19 vaccination rate in Europe.
Steve also served as a Board Member of Bank of Valletta, where he was a member of the Audit Committee and Chairperson of the Information Technology Oversight Committee. In this capacity, he played a key role in the implementation of the Oracle Banking Platform, acting as a liaison between the board and the IT team.
Steve is also a Senior Visiting Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy at the University of Malta. He currently lectures Social Media Strategy and Big Data Analytics in the MSc and MBA degree programmes.
Steve holds a First-Class Honours degree in Computing and Information Systems, an MBA with Distinction in e-Business, and a PhD from the University of Malta in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University, with a focus on the use of data in strategic decision-making. His research interests include big data, social media analytics, sentiment analysis, and business intelligence. He is also the creator of SentimentMe, a real-time sentiment analysis web service that harvests and analyses live data streams.
